What Does an AI Voice Agent Cost? Pricing Models Compared

Published 2 November 2026

People at a dark wooden table go through printed documents and an open folder, with two pens lying between them

An AI voice agent is priced per minute of call time, per call or conversation, as a fixed platform or licence fee, or as a mix of these. On top come one-off costs for setup, flow design and integrations, and recurring costs for maintenance and changes. Per-minute and per-call prices are easy to compare and easy to misread: they count every call the agent touched, not the calls it resolved. Compare offers on cost per resolved call: the total cost over a year divided by the calls the agent completed without a person.

In short:

  • There are four common pricing models: per minute, per call, a platform or licence fee, and hybrids with volume tiers.
  • The usage price is only part of the cost. Setup, integrations, telephony, maintenance and your own team’s time belong in the comparison.
  • What drives the price: call volume, the number and complexity of call reasons, integrations and compliance requirements.
  • The fair unit is cost per resolved call, not cost per minute.

How AI voice agents are priced: the four models

ModelWhat you pay forWorks well whenWatch out for
Per minuteEvery minute the agent is on a callCalls are short and volume is predictableLong or slow conversations cost more; check whether hold time and transfers count
Per call or conversationEvery call the agent handlesCalls vary in length but follow a clear patternCheck whether dropped calls, transfers and very short calls are billed
Platform or licence feeAccess to the platform for a period, often with a volume bundleVolume is high and stable, and you want a fixed budgetOverage rates above the bundle, and what is included in “the platform”
Hybrid and volume tiersA base fee plus usage, with lower rates at higher volumeYou expect growth or seasonal peaksThe rate at the volume you will really have, not the entry tier

Per minute

You pay for call time. It is the most common model for self-serve voice tools, because it maps directly to the vendor’s own costs for speech recognition, the language model and speech synthesis. The catch: a per-minute price rewards short calls, not resolved calls. An agent that drops a caller after 40 seconds is cheap per call and expensive for your contact center, because that caller calls back or waits for an agent.

Per call or conversation

You pay for each call the agent handles, whatever its length. That makes budgeting easier when calls vary. Ask how a “call” is defined: does a call that is transferred to a person in the first step count? Does a caller who hangs up during the greeting?

Platform or licence fee

You pay a fixed amount per month or year for the platform, often with a volume bundle included. This suits high, stable volume and gives finance a predictable number. Check what the fee includes (flows, integrations, reporting, support, changes) and what you pay above the bundle.

Hybrid and volume tiers

Many enterprise contracts combine a base fee with usage, and lower the unit rate as volume grows. Compare these at the volume you expect in year two, including peaks, not at the entry tier.

The costs outside the per-minute price

The usage price is the most visible line and rarely the largest. A complete comparison includes:

  • Setup and build. Designing the first flows, writing prompts and test cases, and getting the agent ready for real callers.
  • Integrations. Connections to your CRM, order or policy system, scheduling and telephony. An agent that cannot look up or change data can only answer questions, so this is where most of the value and much of the effort sits. See what integrating AI agents with your CRM involves.
  • Telephony. Phone numbers, SIP trunks and carrier minutes, if they are not included.
  • Maintenance and changes. New products, new rules and seasonal peaks all mean flow changes. Ask who makes them, how fast, and at what cost.
  • Security and compliance reviews. Data processing agreements, information security questionnaires and audits take time on both sides, more so in regulated sectors.
  • Your own team’s time. Someone owns the agent: reviewing calls, approving changes, reporting.
  • Handover staffing. The agent hands complex calls to people, so the team behind it is part of the cost base.

What drives the price up or down

Four factors move the price most:

  1. Call volume. More calls lower the cost per call in most models, because the fixed costs are spread over more calls.
  2. Number and complexity of call reasons. One structured request (order status) is cheaper to build and run than ten reasons with exceptions.
  3. Integrations. Each system the agent reads from or writes to adds build and test work.
  4. Compliance requirements. Sector rules, data location and audit obligations add work in contracting, configuration and review.

Peaks matter too. A contact center with storm or season peaks needs capacity for its busiest days, and the contract should say what those days cost.

Cost per resolved call vs cost per contact: how to compare offers fairly

Cost per contact is your total operating cost divided by all contacts handled. It is the right number for the contact center as a whole. To compare AI voice agent offers, narrow it down:

Cost per resolved call = total annual cost of the agent ÷ calls the agent completed without a person

The total annual cost includes every line above, not just usage. “Completed without a person” means the caller’s request was handled and they did not have to be transferred or call back.

An illustrative example, with index numbers rather than prices. Offer A costs 100 per year in total; Offer B costs 120. Both handle the same 10,000 calls a month. Offer A completes 40% of them without a person, Offer B 60%. Per resolved call, Offer A costs 100 ÷ 48,000 and Offer B 120 ÷ 72,000: B is about 20% cheaper per resolved call, although it is 20% more expensive on paper.

Two warnings:

  • Contained is not resolved. A call that ends without a transfer is not always a resolved call; the caller may simply have given up. Gartner found that only 14% of customer service issues were fully resolved in self-service (Gartner, 19 Aug 2024). Ask the vendor to show completed, transferred and dropped calls separately, per step of the flow.
  • AI is not automatically cheaper. Gartner predicts that by 2030 the cost per resolution for generative AI will exceed $3, higher than many B2C offshore human agents, as AI vendors move from subsidized growth to profitability (Gartner, 26 Jan 2026). For the human side of the comparison, use your own fully loaded cost per handled call. As a reference point, Eurostat puts the average hourly labour cost in 2025 at €34.9 in the EU and €47.9 in the Netherlands (Eurostat, 31 Mar 2026).

How to compare AI voice agent offers: 8 questions to ask

  1. What exactly is billed? Minutes, calls, conversations or a bundle, and how each is counted.
  2. Are transferred and dropped calls billed? And at the same rate as completed calls?
  3. What does setup include? Which flows, which integrations, how many test rounds.
  4. Who changes the flows after go-live? Your team, the vendor or both, and what a change costs.
  5. Which integrations are included? CRM, telephony, scheduling, your own backends.
  6. What reporting do you get? You want completed, transferred and dropped calls per step of the flow, not a single containment rate.
  7. What does it cost at double the volume? And during your busiest week.
  8. What are the term and exit terms? Minimum duration, notice period, and what happens to your flows and data when you leave.

How AssistYou prices

AssistYou does not publish a price list. Every deployment is different: call volume, integrations and compliance requirements shape the proposal, and we quote after we understand your situation. The AI Voice Agent answers, verifies, resolves routine requests and hands over warmly, and Agent Statistics shows per flow step how many calls were completed, transferred to a person or dropped, which is the data you need to calculate cost per resolved call. Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI voice agent cost? It depends on the pricing model and on what is included. Vendors charge per minute, per call, a platform or licence fee, or a mix, plus one-off setup and integration costs and recurring maintenance. Call volume, the number of call reasons, integrations and compliance requirements drive the total. Compare offers on cost per resolved call.

Is per-minute or per-call pricing better? Neither is better by default. Per-minute pricing suits short, predictable calls; per-call pricing makes budgets easier when call length varies. In both cases, check whether transferred and dropped calls are billed, and compare the total cost per resolved call.

What does it cost to set up an AI voice agent? Setup covers designing and testing the first flows, connecting the agent to your CRM and telephony, and security and compliance reviews. The more call reasons and systems involved, the higher the setup cost. Ask vendors exactly what their setup fee includes.

What is cost per resolved call? The total annual cost of the AI voice agent, including setup, integrations, usage and maintenance, divided by the number of calls it completed without a person. It is the fairest way to compare offers, because it ignores calls the agent touched but did not resolve.

Is an AI voice agent cheaper than a human agent? For repetitive, structured calls it often is, but not automatically. Gartner predicts that the cost per resolution of generative AI will exceed $3 by 2030. Compare your own fully loaded cost per handled call with the agent’s cost per resolved call, and keep people on the calls that need judgment.
